Courtroom printer

We now have an HP LaserJet 1320nw printer

in each courtroom of the District. The purpose of having the printer there is so that jury charge revisions, last-minute orders, plea papers and criminal judgments, or materials from attorneys can be printed on the spot. Previously we've had to use the "sneaker net" method or find a networked printer elsewhere in the courthouse.

These instructions relate only to Windows. Sorry, but that's all I know about. There is a printed instruction sheet with each printer, but presented here are some links to the necessary setup files and programs for anyone who wishes to pre-prepare for accessing the printer. This printer cannot be added to your system using the usual "Printers and Faxes | Add Printer" Windows method.

First, a little about the courtroom setup:

  • Johnson City is wireless only. Therefore, you must have an 802.11 wireless network card in your computer. Burnet, Llano and San Saba are all wired networks. You will need your own ethernet CAT 5 patch cable of 5-6 feet in length.
  • In Burnet, you must be pre-authorized to access the network. To obtain access, please contact the court administrator's office at least two days in advance of your desired access.

The basic steps are fairly simple, assuming you are reasonably comfortable at connecting to a network and executing a program off of a CD (or downloaded from the internet), and adding printers. In summary:

  • First install the printer driver. There is a CD in each courtroom with the driver files and you can easily install that prior to arriving at the courtroom.
    • Depending on your operating system, here are the drivers:
    • Once you've saved the driver file (which is an executable file) to your computer, navigate to it and execute it (i.e. double-click on the file name).  Follow the installation instructions.
  • Next, download and install the "HP Install Network Printer Wizard" available from the HP site. The courtroom CD also has this program on it. Just follow the instructions to install the wizard.
    • You will run the wizard program later after you are in the courtroom with the printer available.

That is all of the advance preparation possible for use of the printer. Everything else must be done with the printer available and accessible by your computer. More detailed instructions are available in the courtroom next to the printer.
